It always seems to be women killed by lorries.
Not as fearless as men maybe and hesitate at the wrong time.

I had some prick turn right in front of me yesterday, he was literally 4 feet from my bumper and I was doing 25mph.
Only by my superb anticipation and brakeing did he not end up under my wheels. No wonder cyclists are dying.

Re: Another Cyclist Killed

Women are less likely to break traffic rules than men. They don't jump red lights when they are right up against the railings when a big fuck-off vehicle suddenly indicates to go left and they're not sure they have been seen etc.
True story. Ken Livingstone set up an enquiry as to why more women were killed than men and what I wrote above is the answer they found.
He also looked into compulsory cycle helmets and found that although a helmet will be safer if you're actually hit, car drivers give on average two feet more space to someone without a helmet. Car drivers are mongs unable to see that propelling a ton and a half of car alongside a person with a bit of plastic on their head might be a little bit dangerous.
He buried that enquiry too.
RIP to the lady cyclist. Imagine what her loved ones are going through now.

That's a nasty junction to manage if youre a cyclist.
what's the bets the truck was turning left and she was in the drivers blindspot?

1964.
So you were driving 4 feet behind a pushbike at 25 MPH?

I saw one of the ambulances trying to get through the rush hour traffic this morning and struggling.
Horrible this, just horrible.

I'd question the wisdom of cycling in central London, especially when there's so much public transport available

I was there a few seconds after the crash. A bloke was standing in front of the lorry cab waving his arms. I saw a mangled bike on the road, thought the bloke was trying to get the drivers insurance details etc. Then I saw the victim, pinned under the rear, left side wheels of the truck. A couple of people were on there way to help. I pulled my phone out, but a women next to me got through to the emergency services before me. The truck was just short of the yellow box junction.

What direction was the truck going? Did it look like it was turning?

I'm of the opinion that heavy lorries should be banned from city centers during 'office hour's' The prob then is people don't want to hear stuff being unloaded when they want to sleep
The other thing is most people have no idea what to do when they are next to a truck
Here is a clue - give it a wide berth . the driver may not see you and never position yourself so you are next to the passesenger door as that is the blind spot

Terrible this, such a shame.
To be honest though, you've got to be mad to cycle in London. Unfortunately, the city was designed in a time when wide roads were not seen as important, therefore it just does not have the right set up for cyclists. That's just the unlucky rub of it. I appreciate it's ethical and all the rest of it, but rule number 1 in life is survival, and you're taking a proper chance every time you get on that saddle in a city like this. I wouldn't do it if you paid me.

Most of these lorries, especially the tippers, have an open space between the front wheels and rear wheels where any cyclist would be crushed if it were turning left.
If this space was filled in with some sort of mesh or guard any close by cyclist would be pushed away from the wheels if in the way whilst it turned left.

Re: Another Cyclist Killed

very good point 1964. It wouldnt be difficult to do.
unfortunately (as seems possible here) these deaths are usually the consequence of inexperienced cyclists not understanding the danger of being next to a lorry that's turning. youre not going to stop that as more people are starting to cycle all the time but you can at least do something like that to try to minimise the injury from it happening.

Seen it on rubbish waggons in southwark. Warning alarms with which direction the lorry is turning when the lorry indicates. Every single lorry should have those installed. No question it would save countless lives.

Re: Another Cyclist Killed

Problem is that it's extremely difficult to see a cyclist from the cab of some of thee lorries and that's added to the fact that a high percentage of them drive like absolute lunatics.
Should see the speed that some of them plough through the junctions outside my office at Tower Bridge. Some must be doing 40 and you've no chance of avoiding.

Bike v Lorry
Lorry wins everytime.
Bike v Car
Car wins everytime
Cyclist be sensible and be safe, whatever injustice you feel at the time you cannot argue when your dead.

Re: Another Cyclist Killed

Tragic.
In general though, cyclists are becoming the main menace on the road with all their lane-hogging, light-jumping, camera-wearing vigilante bollocks.
No-one like a grass, never mind a camp, angry one in lycra.
